Four full days staying in Salzburg was just about right. Enough time to explore much of the city but not get bored by any stretch.
A few things you need to know before you go:
The weather changes constantly, plan for sun, rain, drizzle, sleet and snow(accept summer) .
Plan to dress in layers and wear a backpack.
Comfortable shoes are a must.
There are equal parts churches, beerhouses/breweries and shops.
Public transportation is so good, no need to rent a car.

Trying to be more prepared, I sent for some information from the tourism bureau. I whittled the list down to three major categories (disclaimer - this is my second trip to Salzburg so your priorities might be different).
Things I could do for free after purchasing the Salzburg Card (great value btw), but not all worth doing.
Beerhalls, breweries, and restaurants with good beer - I mean I was close to Bavaria and Salzburg takes their beer just as serious.I didn’t like every beer but I gave it a good college try to drink many. (Think my liver needs a break.)
Churches - there are a boatload of churches - some worth viewing and some not.

If you’re into classical music, there’s plenty of Mozart to go around. He was born there and spent his formative years in Salzburg. I enjoy his music, but don’t care where he lived, slept, etc. On the positive note, there are concerts of some sort about 300 days a year. Some may be in churches, courtyards and even the Hohensalzburg fortress.
Keep an eye out for upcoming posts to see pictures and brief notes about churches, beer and the Salzburg card.
