The Fontana Maggiore was designed by the sculptors Nicola and Giovanni Pisano and is characterized by its hexagonal basin supported by three concentric polygonal bases. The fountain is adorned with numerous sculptures, including statues, reliefs, and decorative elements. The two main basins are decorated with intricate reliefs that depict various scenes, allegorical figures, and historical events.

The panels on the Fountain are of great significance as they tell a visual story that encompasses a wide range of themes. There are three main levels of panels:

1.     Historical Panels: The lower basin features panels that depict historical events and scenes from the Bible. These panels serve as a visual chronicle of important moments in Perugia's history and convey moral and religious messages.

2.     Allegorical Panels: The middle basin is adorned with allegorical panels representing the liberal arts, the months of the year, and the signs of the zodiac. These allegorical representations symbolize the intellectual and cultural achievements of the time.

3.     Astrological and Zodiacal Panels: The upper basin is decorated with panels depicting the signs of the zodiac and planetary symbols. This celestial theme reflects the medieval fascination with astrology and the belief in the influence of celestial bodies on earthly affairs. (This level is no longer present)

Fontana Maggiore was commissioned to celebrate the completion of the aqueduct that brought water to Perugia. It served not only as a functional fountain providing a water supply to the city but also as a symbol of civic pride and cultural achievement during the medieval period. The choice of themes on the panels reflects the intellectual and artistic interests of the time.

The Fountain stands as a testament to the artistic and cultural richness of medieval Italy. Its panels continue to be studied and admired for the insights they provide into the historical, philosophical, and religious perspectives of the 13th century. Visitors to Perugia can still marvel at this masterpiece, appreciating both its aesthetic beauty and the depth of meaning embedded in its sculptural details.
