A few times in my life have I been really awestruck, gobsmacked, speechless- and today was one of those days. I absolutely had to share this with you.

Above the main entrance to the cathedral.

After finding a public lot to park, I followed the sign to the duomo -not realizing that I parked behind it with only another building separating me and the duomo, my jaw nearly dropped to the ground when I turned the corner and saw the Duomo of Orvieto.

Attempting to prepare for this trip, I saw pictures, nerded out and watched a program on the most amazing churches in Italy, read about it etc- but none of this prepared me for the vast size, black and white striped walls and then the intricate facade of the church. I’ve been to St. Marks in Venice and Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, but this one really was amazing in its very own way.

I think what is was for me is the combination of the mosaics, carved marble statues, reliefs and bronze doors, all seen before you enter the church. The combined elements are telling stories from the Bible. Even if you aren’t a believer, there is so much to appreciate and gaze upon that you need this on your bucket list. Why flocks of people aren’t there all the time St Marks and the Sagrada is beyond me.

Mind you, I still have the Duomos of Florence and Sienna to see this trip, but I can’t imagine they will be better- can’t wait to find out!
